After 7 rounds of golf it came down to the final green and the final putt for Brett, Rich and Shane. The Wobbly Fat Man was there for the taking as Shane started the day with a 6 point lead over Brett. Shane showed true grit and did NOT succumb to the pressure by shooting an even par 36 points. He was visibly shaking when standing over his final par putt... an 11 foot downhill left to righter. With the grit of a wiley veteran, the American slammed in the putt and shouted for joy, knowing he had a shot on the hole and 3 points. However, Brett pulled out his best Tiger impersonation and shot a career-high 42 points that included 4 birdies and an eagle on a par 4! After watching Shane drain his putt, the two-time Bda Tour winner snuck in a downhill left to right 6 footer to halve the Stableford contest. Since the Stableford points were tied, the tie-breaker rule in place for 3 years was used to determine the winner. The discarded round was then counted and Brett prevailed with a +10 round over Shane's +12 round.
A heroic effort by Rich in the inaugral Match Play event saw him come back from 3 down to end the match all square with Shane. Since no tie-breaker rule was in effect for the new Match Play plate, Shane and Rich agreed to share the plate for 6 months each.

Nobody wants to ever experience exploding feet and oozing, festering, weeping leg lesions, but the fact is, that's a part of the game. We might be tempted to grant relief, but we can't according to Decision 1-4/10 in the USGA Rules of Golf Book of Decisions:

Chuck joined the 2003 Tour as a beginner and was given a 42 h’cap. However after shooting scores of 7 and 9 under and leading at the halfway stage, his h’cap was reduced to a more realistic 33. He eventually finished 5th. Gifted with natural ability he also has an extremely hot head and has a tendency to self destruct when things don’t go his way. This can result in him sitting out holes, preferring to stay in the cart with a towel over his head or shot-gunning cans of beer. These antics were witnessed by Mike and Nick on the final round where Chuck shot 135. (23 over H’Cap).
Tour attenance: 2003 (5th). |

In 2008, the BDA Tour Matchplay Plate was introduced as a way to give hope to the perennial cellar dwellars (Nick, Rich, Andrew) after they finally realized that they had no chance of winning the strokeplay event!
Depending on the number of players in any given year, the matchplay event begins on round 5 and the seedings are determined by the Stableford standings after round 4 (throw away rounds are ignored). This gives players who are well back in the strokeplay event the chance to still bring home some silver. The matchplay event is a single elimination event based on Stableford points per hole as defined by the current strokeplay event rules. During the final round the two remaining matchplay contestants are paired in the same group for some die-hard head-to-head action. Wagers are encouraged.
The winner of the Matchplay tournament gets to keep the BDA Matchplay Plate for 1 year.
